Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD) – Learn to Cope Through Life Coaching & Aromatherapy
Today, over 7 million people suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD). PTSD is caused by certain events one may have been involved in, or witnessed, that causes certain memories and/or emotions to surface when certain “triggers” are present. These triggers may cause the inability to adjust and cope with the emotions or images that may resurface due to the event that cause the Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome in the first place.
Those suffering from PTSD can experience anger, flashbacks, nightmares, shame, rage, guilt and a roller coaster of emotions. This can cause severe issues with every day life of the individual who is experiencing them, especially in relationships, work settings, enjoyment of activities, and overall health and wellness.

Everyone suffers from having been involved in a traumatic experience at one time or another in their lifetime. Maybe you were involved in a car accident that has left you with flashbacks of the accident, fear of driving down that road again, or that it took some time to even get back into a car and drive. We all feel normal imbalances, difficulties “fitting in”, feeling fearful, or find it hard to stop thinking about the event that caused the abnormal feelings. These are normal responses to traumatic events. For most of us, these responses do not last for more than several days or weeks.
But, if you suffer from symptoms like those stated above, you may be experiencing more than just a normal imbalance, you may be experiencing PTSD. A normal response becomes PTSD when you experience a continued circle of shock because the memory of the events that cause your PTSD and your feelings are no longer connected. In order to break that circle, it is imperative that one faces their memories and emotions, and learn how to cope during times the memories and emotions are triggered, and are at their strongest. Responses to traumatic events that have crossed over to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder can last months, years or even a lifetime. The best way to bring back the balance is the learn how to cope with the triggers that cause the emotional imbalance and memories in the first place, and redirect those imbalances into a positive response. Life coaching and aromatherapy can play a significant role in bringing you back to your pre-traumatic self.

How Can Aromatherapy & Essential Oils Alleviate PTSD Symptoms?
If you are unfamiliar with essential oils, you can attend our free Essential Oils 101 online class here, and visit our Aromatherapy information page.
Essential oils have been used for centuries, dating back to Biblical times, as a natural way to heal the mind & body. The Limbic region of the brain controls our body chemistry and emotional well-being. It influences hormones, regulates the bodies metabolism, and plays a major part in our emotions such as stress, pain, pleasure, rage, anger, fear, and affection. By using essential oils, one can control certain emotions that surface during the trigger that causes one with PTSD and change the emotional behavior because it interrupts the stress response.
There are two important parts of the limbic system, the Amygdala and the Hippocampus, that play an important role in order to keep order and balance, and stress at bay. In order to do that, they both must be able to communicate well with each other.
The Amygdala controls the “fight or flight” response in our body. It has the ability to tell us that danger is near, or that we are safe. It can sense sights, sounds, smells, and touch. The Amygdala causes us to make rash decisions or judgments in a given situation. It does not have the ability to reason. It is the center of our emotional behaviors, emotions themselves, and our motivation. During an event that causes trauma, the Amygdala turns on the emotional stressor that let’s us to know there is danger, but does not have the ability to turn it back off so readily as in an individual who is not suffering from PTSD.
The Hippocampus plays a large role in our ability to learn and retain the information of the past. It is also responsible for forming our memories and storing the information so that we can utilize these memories latter on in our long-term memory.
Normally, the Amygdala and the Hippocampus work together, but when disrupted by a traumatic stressor, the two do not communicate effectively. This causes the emotional information stored in the Amygdala and the ability for your Hippocampus to take a memory and store it as a long-term memory, to stay in the short-term memory, which causes one have the feeling of constant danger, which in turn causes great stress.
Certain essential oils and blends of various oils together can help restore balance when the short-term memory is stuck and your emotions feel out of control. This is where Angelica Sage Wellness can help.
